Fort Smith is located in Sebastion County between the Arkansas and Poteau rivers. This fort was a military outpost used for patrolling a near Indian territory in 1817. A man named General Thomas Smith had the fort named after him. After seven years of use, the fort was abandoned. During this time a town founded by John Rogers was built around the fort.
